Description

A high-energy relay-style game where Squirrels scurry to gather “nuts” for their nest!A high-energy relay-style game where Squirrels scurry to gather “nuts” for their nest!
Squirrel teams race to collect acorns (bean bags, soft balls, or paper “nuts”) and bring them back to their nest, encouraging movement, cooperation, and lots of giggles.

Resources

10–20 small items to be “nuts” (e.g. brown bean bags, ball-pit balls, paper scrunched into acorn shapes)

2–4 baskets or containers to act as “nests”

Cones, markers, or chalk to create a start and nut pile area

Optional: hula hoops or spot markers for a fun obstacle path

Instructions

? Setup:
Divide the Squirrels into 2–4 teams, depending on group size.

Place each team’s “nest” basket at one end of the space (start line).

Create a “nut pile” on the opposite end — same distance for all teams.

If indoors, you can make a “forest path” using floor markers or hula hoops for extra fun.

?️ How to Play:
Line up the Squirrels behind their nests.

On “Go!”, the first player in each team scurries to the nut pile, picks up one nut, and returns it to their team’s nest.

Tag the next Squirrel to go!

Repeat until all the nuts are gathered or a set time is up (e.g., 5 minutes).

? Fun Variations (for multiple rounds):
Squirrel Moves!
Each round, change how they move:

Scurry (run)

Hop like a bunny

Crawl like a squirrel under branches

Balance a nut on their head! ?

Nut Mix-Up
Use different colour balls to represent different kinds of nuts. Call out a “nut of the day” (e.g., red = hazelnut) and they must find that colour only.

Teamwork Challenge
Instead of individual races, try a buddy run — two Squirrels hold hands or carry a nut together in a spoon or soft cloth.

Obstacle Forest
Add cones or hula hoops to hop through or go around — pretend they’re roots, logs, or puddles!

?‍♀️ Cool-Down/Transition Tip:
After the last round, gather the Squirrels and say:

“Wow! That was a LOT of nut gathering! Let’s sit in our nests and take a big squirrel breath in... and out...”
Then move on to a calmer moment, like yoga or story time.

? Optional Reflection Questions:
“What helped your team work together?”

“Was it easier to scurry or hop?”

“How many nuts did your nest collect?”
