Belgian Game: Schipper, mag ik overvaren?
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Objective:
Beaver Scouts ask the “skipper” for permission to cross an imaginary river. If permission is given with a condition (e.g. "only if you're wearing red"), only those who meet the condition can cross safely. Others must try to run without getting caught.
Resources
Space needed: Hall or open area (indoors or outdoors)
Materials: None
Group size: Minimum of 6, but works great with 10–20
Instructions
Roles:
One child is the Schipper (Skipper).
The rest are Sailors trying to cross the river.
---
Set-Up:
1. Mark two lines about 10–15 feet apart. These are the riverbanks.
2. The Skipper stands in the middle of the “river”.
3. The other Beavers start on one riverbank.
---
How to Play:
1. Together, the Sailors chant:
> “Schipper, mag ik overvaren?” (or "Skipper, may I cross over?")
2. The Skipper replies:
“Ja, maar alleen als je…” ("Yes, but only if you...")
Finish the sentence with a condition, such as:
"...wearing something blue."
"...can hop on one leg."
"...have short sleeves."
"...can quack like a duck."
3. Beavers who meet the condition cross safely to the other side.
4. Those who don’t must try to run across without getting tagged by the Skipper.
5. If tagged, they become a Skipper-helper in the river.
6. Play continues until one Beaver is left — they become the new Skipper for the next round.
---
Safety Tips:
Use soft hands for tagging – no pushing or tackling.
Make sure the running area is clear of trip hazards.
Adjust the distance between riverbanks based on the space and group size.
---
Tips for Leaders:
Encourage inclusive conditions ("if you’re smiling!" or "if you like pizza!") so everyone can participate.
