Lava Flow Experiment
Report Copyright Infringement View in OSM UK
Description
Create moving lava on 'the side of a volcano' and watch how temperature affects the flow.
Resources
Baking Tray, Honey, Timer, Measuring Jug, Microwave or Hob and Pan.
Instructions
1) Place baking tray at an angle in a sink (this is the side of your volcano)
2) Measure about 25ml of runny honey in the measuring jug
3) Pour the honey on the top of the baking tray and time how it takes to get to the bottom.
4) Repeat but with honey that has been heated, measure how long it takes now
Discuss how heat affects the flow, and how this is seen in the real world with volcanoes.
(note: although heat will make the lava flow quicker, slow-moving lavas can potentially be more dangerous because they can block the volcano's vent causing an explosive eruption)
