Description
For those sessions when a real fire is not an option
Resources
Tuff tray or mat (optional)
Logs, sticks or wood of any sort in various sizes
Camping lantern, torches or battery tealights. even glow sticks will work in a pinch
red and yellow tissue paper or plastic
Some simple camp songs and a leader with a nice strong voice
Optional - Smores or other edibles are optional but a nice addition
Optional - Teddies, camp blankets etc .
Instructions
Distribute the logs either around the hut or outside before the meeting starts.
Get the Beavers or Squirrels to collect the wood - can be done individually or in lodges
Show them how to build a campfire either in your preferred method or following: https://www.scouts.org.uk/activities/running-a-campfire-event/ Talk about the importance of a dry base, of starting with small kindling and building up to larger pieces.
'Light' the fire safely, either by the children placing their tealights, or with a larger light source. This is a great way to practise fire safety before tackling the real thing, especially if you have children who struggle with new things
Cover the lights with paper or plastic to give a fire effect.
Then get your Squirrels or Beavers seated around the 'fire' and crack on with the camp songs. We like the following:
Campfire's Burning
Everywhere We Go
There ain't no flies on us
The Day I went to Sea
Alice the Camel
Five Little Ducks
Goodnight Beavers
