Instructions

Relay UK is an app-based service which allows deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired people to make phone calls to anyone. You don't need special kit and it is free to use (just pay your normal phone call charge).

People have been using the UK's national relay service since 1991, when it was known as TypeTalk.
Back then, it was only available to textphone users (because that was the only technology available).
In 2012, Ofcom decided that UK users needed an improved relay service, one that would allow for more natural conversations on a wide range of devices that weren't around when the first relay service started: smartphones, computers, and tablets.
So, in 2014 BT launched the Next Generation Text service - now called Relay UK, which they run for everyone on behalf of all UK landline and mobile phone providers

To use Relay UK, you need to download the app onto your device (smartphone, tablet, laptop). You open the app and dial the number you want to call. When the call is connected, the app will show the word JOIN. When the person you are calling answers, the Relay operator will speak to them, explaining the call and the Relay service. When the person replies, the operator types their reply for you to read in the app. You then type or speak back to the operator and so on. When you are finished, you end the call and you will be asked if you want to save the conversation, so you can go back to it if you need to read it again. If you don't have a smartphone, tablet or laptop you can use a textphone, just dial 18001 before dialling the number you are calling. You can also use it to make emergency (999) calls.
