Description
The Beavers will explore how children in Ancient Greece played, learn about traditional toys, and recreate a favorite toy using their creativity. This fun and educational session includes brainstorming, matching games, storytelling, and hands-on crafting.
Resources
Photos of ancient Greek toys and their names for the matching activity (Attachment).
Images or replicas of:
Buzzer (Iynx): Disc with string.
Marbles (Spheria): Small balls.
Animal Figurines: Small animal models.
Spinning Top (Stomvros): Tops.
Knucklebones (Astragaloi): Dice-shaped pieces.
Play-doh or clay for the crafting activity.
Table covers or mats for crafting.
Wet wipes for cleanup.
Optional: A short video or illustrations about children’s lives in Ancient Greece.
Instructions
Intro - Brainstorming (5-10 minutes)
1. Gather Beavers in a circle and ask, “How do you think children in Ancient Greece played?”
2. Encourage them to share their ideas and discuss any knowledge they have about Ancient Greece.
Activity 1 - Guess the Name (15 minutes)
1. Provide each Beaver with a set of pictures (Attachment) showing the toys and their names.
2. Ask them to match the names to the toys and share why they think each name fits.
3. Discuss the correct answers, explaining the history and significance of each toy using the provided descriptions.
Activity 2 - Show & Tell (10 minutes)
1. Show the Beavers how each toy was used.
2. For example:
Spin the buzzer to show its sound and patterns.
Roll marbles or demonstrate knucklebones by tossing them.
3. Share interesting facts about the toys, like how archaeologists found similar toys near the Acropolis.
Activity 3 - Hands-on/Recreate Your Favorite Toy (20-30 minutes)
1. Let each Beaver choose their favorite toy to recreate.
2. Provide them with clay or play-doh and guide them to sculpt their chosen toy.
Example: Shape a disc for the buzzer, or mold an animal figurine.
3. Encourage creativity and celebrate all attempts.
Close/Reflection (5-10 minutes)
1. Gather the Beavers and ask:
“What was your favorite toy?”
“What surprised you about toys from Ancient Greece?”
2. Let them share their creations and thoughts.

1. Adapt timing based on the number of Beavers and their engagement levels.
2. Ensure safety and manage materials during crafting to avoid mess or accidents.
