Instructions
Did you know?
- Advent comes from an old Latin word that means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’.
- Advent is the time Christians prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
- Advent is also a time when Christians look forward to the time that Jesus will come again.
Getting into the activity
1) Before the activity a leader should cut up the Advent windows and hide them around the meeting space. How well these are hidden will vary the difficulty of the activity and how long it takes. We suggest hiding some of the windows in easy to find places and others in slightly more difficult places. Consider also hiding chocolate coins with each window, for children to collect as they complete the activity.
2) Start by asking the group who has an Advent calendar? Do they know how many windows are on their calendar? What is the Advent calendar counting down to?
Now explain to the group that they are about to go on a very special ‘Advent’ure, as they have the job of finding 24 Advent windows that have been hidden around your meeting space.
3) Give each child, or pair or children, a copy of the activity sheet. This shows all 24 Advent windows, with blank boxes underneath them. Explain to the group that their job is to hunt around looking for each of the numbered windows. Next to each Advent window is an important letter. Their job is to write that letter underneath the matching window(s) on their sheet.
4) After finding all 24 windows, a secret message will be revealed. Who will be the first child/pair to find all 24 windows and reveal the hidden message? Please note, some younger children may require help with this part of the activity.
5) After everyone has completed the activity, sit back down as a group. Ask one of the children to read out the hidden message – “Jesus is coming, make way for the King”.
6) Finish by sharing with the children what Advent is all about. Use our ‘Did You Know?’ facts to help you with this. Explain that Advent is the season where Christians prepare themselves for the birth of the baby Jesus and the hope that his birth brought to our world. How exciting is that!
Ideas to take this further
Get creative by making an Advent calendar that children can then take home and open each day in the run up to Christmas.
Keeping everyone safe
Please make sure the area you are using for hiding the Advent windows is safe and appropriate for the age group. Provide children with clear boundaries on where they should or shouldn’t look for clues.
