Description

Maide Leisg - a trial of strength.
The oldest Maide Leisg competition in the world takes place at the Carloway Show and Highland Games on the Isle of Lewis.

Resources

A strong stick, typically between 2.5 - 3.5 feet long, but can be any suitable length.

Instructions

A Gaelic game, phonetic pronunciation "mad-je leashk" (Scots Gaelic meaning 'Lazy Stick')

Two people test their strength by sitting on the ground facing each other with their legs outstretched, with the soles of their feet pressing against each other. This position helps with leverage once the game begins.
The two competitors each take one end of a stick and begin to pull. against each other until one of them is raised from the ground.
Whichever athlete is stronger will pull their opponent toward them, but the position with the feet holds the players in place, which means that the weaker one will begin to be lifted off the ground.
Can be run as a tournament.
