Resources

Purchase a variety of global foods (we got through 15 in an hour with 15 children)
eg, Brie, Chorizo, olives, pitta and Tzatziki, oatcakes, tortilla and guacamole, gifflar cake, tim tams, dragon fruit , mango, bagel, edamame beans, cous cous, panetttone cake, figs (chop and prep food as appropriate and check for any allergens or dietary requirements) - pick a variety of foods, so there is at least one new food that they might like to try. (keep ALL packaging for allergen reference)
(Think bowls and spoons, drinks of water following anything spicy),
Create a passport that can be stamped for each food they try (example attached) space to add their name on the front
Something to stamp the passports with (self inking stamps or bingo dabbers, or just use a pen or crayon)
Map of the world for the wall or Atlas to point out countries visited
Print flags, small flag on A4 paper, so you can place plate next to flag
list of greetings for appropriate countries, set up chairs for the plane ride
a bin near the tasting table, to dispose of food that is tried, but not eaten!
NB. Keep a list of food and countries, so leaders can support handing out and prepping next country

Instructions

set up your chairs like a plane, (Children wash/sanitise hands before they begin)
Hand out passports (add names to top of passport)
Fly to countries in turn, move from plane around a table, get Squirrels to identify flag and repeat greeting from the country and then try the food. (you could ask does it grow on a plant, underground, come from an animal, is it made using lots of ingredients, in a factory etc) (also talk about other foods from the countries eg italy- have you tried pizza, pasta, ice cream) (Show photos of unusual food, eg dragon fruit before and after cutting as it looks so different)
Place one food at a time on the table, and take it in turns to try. (no double dipping of sauces) have a bin handy to dispose of any food they don't like!
For every food tried they got a stamp in their passport from a leader.
To keep Squirrels focused and prevent fidgeting, they followed a leader and flew around the hut with their arms out (pretend planes) between some countries and others we returned to the chair plane.
at the end of the session, ask for favourite foods, favourite country and whether they have tried something they haven't eaten before
