Description
Introduction
In the TV programme, Race Across the World is a journey via checkpoints, without flying, without mobile phones where contestants need to work out a plan along the journey with only a basic map.
This is the slightly lower budget Scout version, Race Across Winchester. Obviously, we aren’t going to be leaving the country, or even Winchester.
General principles
• Working in teams
• Race across Winchester to a final destination.
• You won’t know the final destination, just your next checkpoint.
• Travel will cost money, more direct, busier routes will cost more. Taking the long way round will generally be cheaper.
• There are also opportunities to earn more money, but you might have to go out of your way do it.

Key safety rules:
• You must stay together as a group, with your adult, at all times.
• No running. You can walk quickly, but to be safe you must not run or you will receive a time penalty.
• Cross roads as a group, using the green cross code and only when everyone is ready.
• High vis must be worn.
How to play
• You will be told your first checkpoint and have 2 minutes to plan.
• Two teams will start at the same time and will be on different routes.
• The next pair of teams will start 5 minutes later.
• Once you reach the checkpoint, you will be given details of your next checkpoint.
• Don’t hang around or you may be overtaken.
• Each square on the map that you cross will cost money, but some are more expensive than others depending on the road you are going along:
o £10 per square
High Street The Broadway
Romsey Road Jewry Street
o £5 per square
Colebrook Street Market Lane Loverose way
The Square St Georges Street Silver Hill
Upper Brooks Street Friars Gate Chesil Street
• All other roads/paths cost £1 per square.
• If you use more than 1 road in a square, the highest cost will be charged.
• If you run out of money, interest of half your earnings will be charged until you pay off your debt.
• You will need to get a job to earn more money, but this will take time.
• The team who takes the least time to complete the route wins.
• If 2 teams take the same time, the team with the most money remaining will win.

Routes
There are two orders for the checkpoints, route A and route B. These can be found as a picture and name on the Routes file.
We started both teams from the Chesil Multistorey carpark as it was convienient for drop off. The finish was at the King Alfred Statue and we joined up in Abbey Gardens.
The teams are given the next location when they arrive at a checkpoint.
We made the groups pay for the route that they took to the checkpoint before we gave them the next checkpoint location.
You could have leaders / adults stationed at the checkpoints ready to take payments and give out the next location, or have leaders / adults go around with the groups.
I have also attached our Comms Plan and Risk Assessment for this activity.
Young People can take turns in leading their team.
