Description
This morning routine is great for scout camp mornings, it helps the scouts wake up and get ready for their day, especially if they have an upcoming hike!
Resources
No resources are needed, except possibly a tarp to do yoga on at campsites, however roll mats can also be used. This routine could be led by any leaders who have watched some yoga videos as they use common moves. Most of this springs from Yoga with Adrienne.
Instructions
Do each of the following moves for a couple of minutes while maintaining deep breathing and really hover on each stretch:
- Start lying on back and draw shoulder blades in to relax shoulders.
- Rock the head side to side.
- Make circles with the feet (ankle roll) and hands (wrist roll).
- Full body stretch (hands over head, still on floor) on inhale and relax on exhale.
- Hug knees to chest and bring nose to knees a few times.
- Cross one leg over the other and hold feet, then rock side to side gently. Then rock up to cross legged position and fall back again and again.
- Once settled sat up cross legged, make circles with head, then shoulders.
- To remind of deep breathing, bring hands above head on inhale, and hands to heart on exhale.
- Place hands on floor next to hips and trun head to stretch neck each way.
- Find tabletop position and begin gentle Cat and Cow pose. A possible variation which I often use is the "Drunk Cat Cow" (see video link below).
- Now make way up to a relaxed downward dog position (doesn't have to be perfect) and rock through each leg for that.
- Finish standing straight and full body stretch (hands above head) on inhale and hands to heart on exhale a few times before finishing with hands at heart and fill bow - "Namaste".
This routine is open to changes and whatever works for your group, I find that this usually takes around 25-35 minutes and is a great way to pass time while breakfast is cooking and get everyone awake, stretched and ready for a physically demanding day!
