What is Diwali? - video ~10-15mins
Diwali is the five-day festival of lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali, which for some also coincides with harvest celebrations, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over darkness.
The date of the festival is calculated according to the position of the moon and the Hindu lunar calendar, and is usually in October or November.

Jar candle holders ~20-30mins
We got them to paint their name, but they could write it on before painting instead.
Make a lantern by decorating the glass.
Put the paint on thinly so the light will shine through (and it has a chance to dry before the end of the night).
Put jars somewhere warm and out of the way of the games to dry.
Games ~45-60mins
Torch limbo
Ditch the stick and use the beam from a torch instead. Players must shimmy under the line of light without breaking it.
Shadow Animal Charades
Give each Six some examples of how to make shadow animals and a torch to practice with.
Give them a time limit to learn at least 1.
Get everyone together and everyone demonstrates their shadow animal and everyone else has to guess what it is.
Keeper of the keys
One person on a chair in the middle of the circle with a blindfold on and keys under the chair. They have to try to locate the thief before they get to the keys.
Take it in turns to walk around the chair twice before trying to grab the keys without getting caught.
Successful thieves have a turn on the chair.
