Instructions

Sit down with the Beavers at the top end of the hall.

Ask Beavers why we recycle:
- materials are not wasted
- some materials are scarce and valuable
- throwing stuff away pollutes our environment and harms wild-life
- burning and dumping rubbish accelerates climate change

What is better than recycling:
- re-use (or sell)
- repurpose
- recycle

To allow things to be recycled they need to be sorted out so that they can be processed more effectively.

What bins do Beavers have at home for recycling? In our game we are going to have 5 bins:
- Food (green)
- Metal (mauve)
- Plastic (red)
- Paper (yellow)
- Glass (blue)

Take an example of each type of recycling. Ask the Beavers what it is and which bin it should go in.

There are some more interesting cards:
- jam jar still has jam in it
- light bulbs are glass but also electrical
- cd is plastic but looks like metal
- book is paper but often needs special recycling
- disposable cup could have a plastic top
- tissues might be snotty!
- fish can may be sharp
- aerosol may explode!

Having talked it through, play the relay game:

Share out the recycling cards shuffled randomly. There are 40 cards (8 cards x 5 categories).
Place paper, glass, plastic, cans & organic at the far end of the hall
In lodges, Beavers take it in turns to run with the top card from their pile and place it in the correct "bin". They need to correct it if it is in the wrong bin.
First to finish (sitting down) wins.
