The Chief Scout has set a special codebreaker challenge for Tuesday Night Cubs!

You will be working in your packs tonight to take on a number of codebreaker challenges to reveal secret messages and create your own.

Each six will be working as a team and the leaders will be looking to you all to see how you help others in your six, listen to each other and work together to solve the problems. Cub points will be awarded to the Cubs and sixes who work well together.

You will start with a morse code challenge, do we know what morse code is?

(Cubs get a chance to explain)

Each six will split into two groups, one led by the sixer and one led by the seconder.

The Sixer’s group will have to convey the message, they won’t be allowed to speak only use long and short noises to convey each letter.

The Seconder’s group have to interpret the message. They are allowed to ask the Sixer’s group to repeat if they need.

There are three words so each Cub should get a chance if they would like to either send or receive the message.

Show example using board & noise.

Ask for each Sixer to come up to get the message and each Seconder to come up and get the answer sheet.

PART 1: START MORSE CODE CHALLENGE (est. 10 mins)

Leaders support challenge to help Cubs interpret message

Message is ‘BEHIND LODGE SIGN’

Behind the sign the Cubs will find an envelope which give the next bit of the challenge.

PART 2: TREASURE HUNT (est. 10 mins)

The message will read ‘Go into the Hall Grounds and find - 3 different coloured bits of card, one envelope and one piece of fruit’.

Cubs to head outside and locate items. The items will be located in the main part of the grounds. Cubs will not need to leave grounds/go up slope.

PART 3: CODEBREAKER (est. 10 - 15 mins)

Each of the coloured cards has a different code in it. The envelope will contain instructions and the code keys.

The instructions will read ‘Split into pairs. Each pair should take a different coloured card and the relevant code key. Each pair has to solve the code. Once all the codes are solved put the solutions together and read out what the message says. Once the whole six has read and thinks that the six can say the message from memory, go to the front of the hall and say the message.’

First six will be awarded 5 points, then 4 for second etc. The Cubs will then be given instructions for the final part.

The message will read as follows:

I promise that I will do my best
to uphold our Scout values, to do my duty to The King,
to help other people
and to keep the Cub Scout Law.

PART 4: SECRET MESSAGES (est. 10 - 15 mins)

Cubs will be given the following instructions:

Do you know the Cubs Scout motto?

Can you ask your Sixer or Seconder?

Now you are going to write the motto as a secret message.

With your leader’s help cut and squeeze the lemon juice into a bowl or cup and mix in a few drops of water

Dip the cotton bud into the mixture and use it to write a secret message onto the white paper

Allow the paper to dry and the juice to become invisible

Reveal your secret message by holding it close to a light bulb/get the leader to iron it (not steam setting).

If there is time, can you write a message to another six?
