Instructions

Aim of Badge
To understand our place in space.
This Badge has 6 options of which 4 must be completed.

Introduction
People who live and work in space are called astronauts.
Some astronauts live and work on the International Space Station.
To keep safe outside of the space station, astronauts wear space suits that keep them warm and provide them with air.
The first all-female spacewalk took place in 2019, with two American Astronauts (https://youtu.be/cNnvYACgwrE).

Instructions
Ladybirds are going to design a spacesuit. Show the picture of the astronaut in a spacesuit (or part of the video of Jessica and Christina)
Explain that:
– the suit must be able to stop the astronaut losing heat;
– it must have its own air supply for the astronaut to breathe.
Give each Ladybird a card worksheet (or pre-cut ‘gingerbread man’), glue, cotton wool, scissors and colouring pencils. The Ladybirds use the scissors to cut out the astronaut. They are already wearing a basic suit. The Ladybirds use the colouring pencils and cotton wool to design a spacesuit for their astronaut.
Give each Ladybird a half a toilet paper roll. Explain that this is the air supply for the astronaut. What method of carrying air should the astronaut use? Should it be carried in a backpack, or under the arm? Encourage each Ladybird to choose the best position for the air supply.
